Thanks to Durff’s Blog in the States I found this clip that is essential viewing for teachers struggling to reason why we need to adapt our practices to embed the use of technology – in Victoria called the Ultranet.

- Should we worry about socioeconomic segregation in Australian schools? December 23, 2024As we enter the Christmas Holiday period in Australian Schools it’s time to reflect on some trends and wonder are we getting better. I know that’s a broader query but a recent Google link on my phone this morning got … Continue reading →mwalker
- Wondering if all teachers in training and graduate teachers are being taught to instruct all students in reading as though they were in the red? September 29, 2024I have this wondering that we are teaching all students in the class – as a whole class lesson – in the junior years as though they all needed the intensive phonic instruction and frequent repetition. Yes some explicit instruction … Continue reading →mwalker

Yvonne,
Thanks for the comment. I seem to get youtube videos on my blog that I can show at school so ask a few questions about that with your technican. I have showed the clip above to staff at a meeting to get their heads into the digital world and start a series of ongoing conversations.
The Ultranet has an I frame which I used to show my blog but I think there are two different audiences at the moment: the DEECD community [that will eventually include parents] and the wider community making an interface between the two will be the challenge [i.e to be able to enter something and decide does it go to the Ultranet or my blog which is has a wider audience or both].
As for the bind you refer to between censorship [external email, youtube, facebook] for protection and education for the wider use I know I prefer the later although a few sleepless nights when things go wrong does make you wonder at times.
In terms of positive experiences – I have students asking me about how they access some the tools I have on site which is kind of neat. The ultranet is the bigger question which I think I’ll be better equiped to answer when I have played with it and facilitated the senior students and some collaborative learning situations.
The one thing I know for sure its its a step in the right direction.
Mark
Thanks for publishing that thought provoking video presentation Mark. It’s just a shame that we can’t view YouTube at school. It’s a bigger shame that we can’t access Yahoo or similar accounts there either. I always feel I am being held back by the Education Department’s rules.Since I began my blog two years ago the ” no email other than Edumail” restrictions came in and spoilt things. I hope the Ultranet will change things for the better but from what I’ve seen so far I’m not confident. Its publishing features seem to be way behind, for exanple,Edublogs. What would some of the more positive experieces you have had with it so far?
