Help for students with language learning disabilities

Over the past 12 months we have received support for students with language learning difficulties from Dr Carl Parsons and his team of trainee speech pathologists from the University of Melbourne. Dr Carl Parsons is supported by the Andrew Dean Fildes Foundation which is committed to helping families and teachers understand what needs to done so that students can overcome their learning or language disability.

In 2007 we completed a complete screening of all our new prep students. Through the screening process we were able to identify some children who were in need intensive language testing and support. Often these were children who presented with normal capabilities just found reading and or writing a real challenge.

The screening program would not have possible without the support of the Foundation. Dr Carl, in association with our assigned Department speech pathologist, now supervise students as they work with these children in need.

Our school council recently made a donation to the Foundation to recognise the contributions the programs make to the lives of so many children and urges other organisations and business to support it.

People interested in the work can contact the Foundation through their website linked above.
