I have posted the updated version of Shift Happens as its still worth showing teachers and parents to set the context for change in education. It goes for about 7 minutes but hang in there – the discussion afterwards is worth it.

December 23, 2024As we enter the Christmas Holiday period in Australian Schools itβs time to reflect on some trends and wonder are we getting better. I know thatβs a broader query but a recent Google link on my phone this morning got β¦ Continue reading βmwalker
- Wondering if all teachers in training and graduate teachers are being taught to instruct all students in reading as though they were in the red? September 29, 2024I have this wondering that we are teaching all students in the class β as a whole class lesson β in the junior years as though they all needed the intensive phonic instruction and frequent repetition. Yes some explicit instruction β¦ Continue reading βmwalker

Jason
I agree it would be good to see an Australian or at least an international perspective.
God I wish that my semicolon parentheses weren’t converted to awful smilies! :'(
The irony is that by the time you finish watching the presentation, two thirds of the information is out of date π
It brings to mind the joke “79% of all statistics are made up on the spot”, I would love it if Fisch actually bothered citing his sources but I guess I am a pedant in that respect. The sweeping generalisation that ‘by third year half the stuff that college students learnt in first year is obsolete’ (to paraphrase) really just serves to emphasise that some educational systems are still focusing on content rather than skills. I dunno, there has already been quite a bit of criticism of “shifthappens” for its US-centric posture and the way that it seems to feed distrust of big bad China although the author denies it on his wiki. But it makes you wonder, while updating the presentation, why not update it to make it more global? I wonder what an Australian version would be like π “By 2020, 98% of rural and remote schools will still be waiting for ADSL, Bloody Telstra”
Cheers, Jason
